Hip Hop aka Hip-Life in Ghana!

Ghana is the home of Highlife music, which spread to Sierra Leone and Nigeria in the 1920's and then to other West African countries. Like most genres, it has grown and developed over the years, and has incorporated various influences. So you know it was only a matter of time before this party music was fused with Hip Hop to create what Ghana calls Hip-Life. Check out this short trailer on it.

More fallout over Tupac news story!

In the words of Illseed at allhiphop.com:
Today Jimmy Henchman (The Game's mgr among other things) is doing interviews at various networks ... to discuss a lawsuit being launched against the L.A. Times and writer Chuck Phillips, aka Scott Templeton.... I am hearing that Diddy, Henchman and even 90’s rapper Little Shawn are suing for a host of things, including defamation of character. I even heard this story is going to unearth the one and only “Haitian” Jacques Agnant. Word is he's been making calls from Haiti. You know, he was deported for some federal conviction. I guess he's angry that this story turned out to be false too! I wish Tupac was around to comment on all this f**kery! At least part of this rumor has been confirmed. Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond made his intentions clear though a statement.

"While we are gratified that the LA Times has acknowledged basing their article on fabricated FBI reports, their apology does not go far enough. Too often public figures are libeled and thought to be unwilling to defend themselves from the lies of bullying, publicity-hungry journalists. The fact is that Chuck Phillips placed Mr. Rosemond and his family in a potentially dangerous situation due to his actions which amounted to more than mere neglect: his actions were done with reckless disregard for the truth and for that the LA Times will be held responsible."

US HIP HOP Blogger gets called out in Africa

We love illseed at allhiphop.com! He got the Hip Hop rumor mill on lock and comes off as a pretty level headed cool dude. The other day, however, he was reporting on some Akon shows that were allegedly cancelled in Kenya around Easter and then said "I didn’t even know they celebrated Easter in Africa." ... Yeah I was surprised he made that comment too. Well several people called him out about it and you know what? He posted a couple -- that's wassup! Check out this response:

Your job is to write rumors, fair enough. But don't spread your ignorance and stereotypes to your readers. What did you think Africa was, the jungle?!? You better go read up on books or fly you’re a** to a country in Africa to see what's going on. You African-Americans need to learn more about the first half of your label; where you originated from. Without knowledge of your origins, you're still mentally used, abused and oppressed; even Africa has made more progress in the last 50 years!

Was Illseed called out or what?! and rightfully so, but I give mad props and respect to Illseed for posting this repsonse. After all, being willing to be called out for your ignorance, learning from it, and taking responsibility for it takes balls. I'm givin him some man points for this one as well as the poster who called him out.

YA HEARD? Remy Ma GUILTY as charged

The verdict just came down in the Remy Ma trial, and the rapper has been convicted on four major charges -- two counts of first-degree assault, attempted coercion, and criminal possession of a weapon.

The charges stem from a 2007 incident in which Remy shot a friend of hers after a fight over $3,000 in cash stolen from Remy's purse. The defense tried to make the shooting an accident -- but it looks like they didn't quite convince the jury.

Remy was not found guilty of gang assault and witness tampering, among the nine total charges she faced. We're told the victim's friends and family taunted Remy when the verdicts were read -- full pandemonium in the courtroom.

Remy could face up from five to 25 years in prison at sentencing. (TMZ)

BANNED BOONDOCKS EPISODE

For all my heads who may have never seen the Boondocks - it is an American cartoon series that provides some biting social commentary through irreverent humor. This episode was supposed to air on the Cartoon Network, but it was banned. It actually aired in Canada and has leaked on line. Watch it before it gets pulled! (note you have to watch both parts to "get it")

Why was it banned? Well this episode (along with another one) indicts another network, BET, Black Entertainment Television, for it's legacy of providing stereotypical and damaging images of Black America to the world. It gives tremendous insight as to how a significant amount of African Americans in the US feel about the network. What is this sentiment? -- that BET does more damage than good, by perpetuating stereotypes and exploiting black self-hatred for financial gain. Uncle Rukus is the epitome of a self-hating African-American Man. In fact, he believes that despite his physical appearance, he is not black but white . See what happens when during the taping of his own reality TV show, sanctioned by BET, he is (hilariously) faced with the scientific reality that he has no white blood in his genetic make-up...

***
(just in case you couldn't watch it....read the following. Please note that even below doesn't do the entire episode justice in its commentary about self-hatred and institutionalized racism)
***
The news (of not being of the caucasion persuasion) sends Rukus into an identity crisis. He eventually becomes suicidal and thereby jeopardizes the taping of the show. Consequently, BET's key executive, Wedgie Hudlin, (a play off of BET's actual Entertainment President Reggie Hudlin) does an intervention, where the two bond over the network's hate for black people. Hudlin unashamedly admits that the only thing that suffers from its programming is the children and says "...we can live with that". Interestingly, the last scene of the episode shows Rukus back to work as a school crossing guard talking affirmingly, pleasantly, and even insightfully to two young black children (the main Boondocks protagonists) encouraging them to safely cross the street. (A surprise to both the viewer and the children. We are all led to think wow did Rukus' experience really transform him?)-- just then we discover that he was actually setting the kids (and us) up to be hit by a bus. He laughs heartily. Like BET, Rukus coats his poison with honey. It may look, taste and sound good, and even seem harmless, but if ingested, it'll rot you from the inside out, -- as exemplified by Mr Rukus himself.

Take note UK, especially since BET just launched in your hood!

RHYMEFEST, CHE GUEVERA & SIERRA LEONE

In the coming months, the blue collar MC Rhymefest will be putting out his second official album, El Che. Che is actually his real name. He's named after Che Guevara. "I wanted to make an album that was revolutionary, out of the norm," he recalled. "What people wasn't thinking about, but everybody felt. [Things] everybody said [to themselves] but nobody knew how to articulate in a rhythmic fashion." There's a song called "Pulls Me Back" that will possibly be the first single and drop in April or May. Elsewhere on the LP, Jadakiss and Kanye West appear on "What Up." Phonte from Little Brother, DJ Toomp and No I.D. also contributed to the project. Fest is particular high on a record called "Stolen" (that's the No I.D. joint), which he describes as " 'Jesus Walks' on steroids." In it, he raps about what's going on in Africa with the Sierra Leone blood-diamond trade. (via MTV)

DJ Green Lantern does African Hip Hop in Nigerian film - God's Own Country

The US has Hollywood, but don't sleep on Nigeria.
Nollywood stand up!
I came across a trailer for the film God's Own Country, whose soundtrack is a mixtape hosted by US's own DJ Green Lantern, Eminem's former DJ and the one who held things down for Jay-Z when he toured Africa. To peep the trailer and download the movie in its entirety for yourself, just check the website www.gocmovie.com/.

Here's the movie's description from the official website:

The United States of America, God’s own Country, land of opportunity, streets pavedwith gold, a place where dreams come true, these were the expectations of Ike Ajayi, an African Immigrant arriving at New York. However, reality quickly dawns on him when he finds out that all that glitters is not gold. Ike encounters a web of betrayal, greed and
credit card scams.
Written, Directed, Produced by Femi Agbayewa and introducing Dauda Momodou and Sylvia Osei, “God’s Own Country” is a fast-paced, frank portrayal of American reality from an African point of view, providing an in-depth look into the life of the African immigrant in North America.
This short film is set against a fast-paced and exciting hip-hop/urban soundtrack that fuses African culture with gritty street anthems highlighting the freshness of this new genre, Nollywood USA.

Artists on the mix include Eldee da Don (Nigeria), Dead Prez, Krukid (Uganda/US), X Plastaz & Jimmy Rage (Tanzania/Jamaica), Moubaraka (Comores/France), Styles P and Lil Wayne. I'm lovin' the cross continential business collabo going down on this venture.
To get the mixtape (for free!), peep the trailer and download the movie in its entirety for yourself, just head to the website www.gocmovie.com/.

Lil' Wayne causes chaos in the UK?

Direct from illseed at allhiphop.com:

Lil’ Wayne rocked at Club Innocence over the weekend, the 15th to be exact. I heard it was pure drama. For whatever reason, the show was completely blocked off from people getting in. Some of the audience eventually got in after the show started. Well, he got on stage right around 11:45 pm and some other rappers were performing! So, Weezy apparently said, “Why are these dudes on stage? I ain’t performing! Let me stomp on their necks! (Or something of that sort.)” Then, I heard Wayne’s security started to physically remove the acts from the stage so that the young Weezy could handle his biz. That didn’t really sit too well with the crowd and the crowd started throwing water on the stage. What does Lil’ Wayne do? He throws his mic from the stage into the crowd. Wayne tried to leave, but was unsuccessful by venue security. I guess they were like, “You are performing tonight or ELSE.” Soooooooo… Wayne came back on the stage and performed for about FIVE minutes and then was out. Wayne bounced with roughly 15-20 groupies – allllllll together now. After that, I heard it was like a riot with fights breaking out everywhere. I heard bodies were stomped out on stage!
And there you have it…

THE SOUTH AFRICAN FUGEES?

Not! But like the Fugees, this Hip Hop Kwaito trio out of South Africa is a force to be reckoned with. Check out this brief intro:

**

**

Anyone who knows anything about South African Hip Hop knows Bongo Maffin. Many US-Hip-Hop-centric folk compare them to the Fugees because they consist of 2 guys and a gal. Thandiswa, like Lauryn, is also a fiercely talented conscious lyricist, songwriter and singer, and is revered in many of the same ways Lauryn is. Flava talked to Thandiswa when she dropped her solo project a couple of years ago and we loved her! (Cop her project Zabalaza and the whole Bongo Maffin catalogue lol.) You know Flava likes to rep the global Hip Hop movement and promote our Hip Hop brothers and sistas worldwide. Those of you who are unfamiliar with Kwaito (Quite-oh). It is the urban music of South Africa. It's sound is influenced by the house music that came of out Europe and America in the 80's. It is then fused with their own local styles and of course Hip Hop, Soul, & Reggae (and anything else they feel inspired to add). Their music is fierce, energy contagious, their lyrical content thought-provoking. You may not understand all the lyrics in this following video, the way- kungakhona, but check the vibe. I think it is really interesting when they are dressed in some traditional garb and are standing like statues and spectacles in some sort of an art exhibit while (white) people come in and stare at them...YOU KNOW they droppin some insight! Enjoy.

South Africa STAND UP!

RAPPER LOON ARRESTED in DUBAI?

In the words of Illseed (allhiphop.com), "Former Bad Boy artist Loon was supposed to do a performance on Tuesday night in Dubai at a club called Chi, alongside DJ Marvelous. The show Marv was advertised as Diddy's official DJ and obviously Loon is a former rapper. One of the people I know told me that they got a phone call a few hours before the gig saying that Loon wouldn't be showing up. Why? Apparently, Loon had some difficulty leaving the United States. Later, the story gets fleshed out a bit more and word got around that Loon was arrested at the airport. So, Loon had two international shows set up, one in Dubai and the other in Oman."
