No Smoking for Alicia Keys in Indonesia

Alicia Keys is taking a stance against marketing cigarettes to children by refusing a tobacco company’s sponsorship of an upcoming concert.

Scheduled to perform a show in Jakarta, Indonesia at the end of the month, billboards have gone up promoting the concert in tandem with Phillip Morris/Sampoerna-made cigarettes, according to Fox Business.

Giant billboards bill the concert as "A Mild Live Production". "A Mild" is a cigarette brand produced by Sampoerna. The billboards feature a large photo of Keys, the logo for "A Mild" cigarettes and a large health warning that states, "Smoking can cause cancer, heart attacks, impotence and harm pregnancy and fetal development."

The singer has been applauded for her efforts to stop the tobacco-maker from sponsoring the show by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The president of the organization, Matthew L. Myers, recently recognized her in a statement on the campaign’s website.

“Alicia Keys has set a positive example that should be followed by musicians and entertainers worldwide by demanding the withdrawal of tobacco industry sponsorship of her July 31 concert in Jakarta, Indonesia,” Myers said. “We applaud Ms. Keys for taking quick action to disassociate herself from the tobacco industry and to prevent her name, image and talent from continuing to be used to market cigarettes to children. It is critical that the tobacco company involved, Philip Morris International/Sampoerna, and concert promoters immediately end the sponsorship and all tobacco-related marketing and branding associated with the concert.”

While it is illegal for tobacco companies to engage in brand name sponsorships of concerts in the U.S. under a 1998 legal settlement, it is allowed in developing countries like Indonesia. (sohh)

Nelly Furtado & rapper sparks riot in Russia!

Nelly Furtado's recent Russian gig descended into a riot after a rapper was banned from the stage. The star was supposed to collaborate with Russian rapper Timati during the gig, held in Moscow on Sunday (July 13). However, the venue's security wouldn't allow the rapper onstage with Furtado, leading to an altercation with the singer's security. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the brawl involved 20 people and ended with "some of the crowd getting covered in blood and Timati losing a tooth". A statement from a venue official apparently read: "We learned at the last moment he was going to perform with Furtado. I gave the order not to let him get on stage." (NME)

Ok now why wouldn't they let him on stage? Is it just some Russian Hip Hop haterade?

In the meantime, here is a lil' taste of Timati

Ok I know Timati was part of an R&B group, but I hope he raps better than he sings' cause this hook sho sounds sappy. I've heard better tracks from him. (you can You Tube him to take a listen) The breakers were hot, but what is up with the tiger/puma/animal across Timati's crotch? Definitely NOT sexy.

Alicia's new video! - Superwoman

Ok 2things.

1) Why does this video have to be so freakin' big! I tried to shrink it, but blogger was not having it.

2) I am not crazy about this song, simply because this whole superwoman complex I think is responsible for alot of women being "strong" for everyone at thier own expense. Yeah I'm strong, but I'm human, not a superhero.

Nevertheless, nice video and I can't wait to see her perform it live!

Erykah Badu tells her critics off!

Rumors have been flying about Erykah being pregnant by her protoge rapper, producer Jay Electronica; apparently many have been very judgemental as well...Here is what she has to say of her critics who posted their two cents on the website OkayPlayer. (warning this post is looooong)

HOW DARE YOU DISRESPECT THE QUEENDOM
…AND MY CHILDREN AND MY INTELLIGENCE.

ive never been so disgusted in all of my life .there is no other place i used to enjoy more .i post no where else .you guys have taken an all time low , tho.
I’LL STATE MY PEACE
i am a great mother and care giver to my 2 children and to this world20.my children are 2 of the kindest and happiest people i have met.I home schooled them and taught them the ways of good to the best of my ability.i am their doctor and their nurse .and even sometimes their mother and their father.

i am an excellent mother and resent all of the negative comments and insults on my character.
I PUT MUCH TIME AND THOUGHT INTO HAVING AND RAISING MY CHILDREN.IVE HAD THE HONORS OF HAVING 2 HOME BIRTHS AND 2 WONDERFUL PARTNERS BY MY SIDE.

every relationship i have been in was because i loved the person DEARLY and was dedicated to us “exclusively” FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS.
the fathers of my children are my brothers and friends .we have a great deal of respect for one another and always will.

WE LOVE OUR CHILDREN TO NO END.
we took our own “vows” and CONTINUE TO UPHOLD THEM.
AND THAT IS WHAT THAT IS .
question?

WHAT IS MARRIAGE ?WHO IS THE JUDGE?WE ONLY UNDERSTAND THE EXAMPLES WE ARE GIVEN ( well sort of)
WOULD IT “LOOK BETTER ” TO MARRY AND DIVIORCE AND MARRY AGAIN ?
WOULD THAT BE MORALLY CORRECT ?
WHATS THE DIFFERENCE ? the government’s involvement i guess.

IDEALLY , IT WOULD BE EXCELLENT TO FIND THE MAN OR WOMAN WHO FULFILLS YOUR SPIRIT AND STAY FOR EVER AND EVER ( thru sickness and health till death do us part ) AND HAVE HEALTHY STRONG CHILDREN AS A RESULT OF A HEALTHY A ND STRONG UNION.(this CAN happen … we need much training , however.)
OR
IS IT REALLY “GOOD” TO STAY IN A RELATIONSHIP WHERE BOTH PARTIES ARE UNFULFILLED , LONGING FOR RELIEF , BRINGING one another down as a result of improper training , creating BAD ENERGY AND EXPERIENCES FOR THE CHILD TO REPEAT ?
(not to mention breeding deceit and anger and resentment )
SEEMS TO CREATE FEARFUL CHILDREN WHO TURN INTO FEARFUL ADULTS .

HOW MANY OF YOU GREW UP IN 2 PARENT HOMES THAT WERE MISERABLE AS F**K?
OR 2 PARENT HOMES THAT WERE NOT PERFECT BUT WORKED?
HOW MANY GREW UP IN ONE PARENT HOMES WHERE THE MOTHER WORKED HARD TO MAKE SURE YOU WERE CARED FOR BUT SHE WASNT QUITE HAPPY?

HOW ABOUT A HOME WHERE THE FATHER WAS THE MAIN CARE GIVER AND DID THE BEST HE COULD -LACKING NURTURE?HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE A SIBLING THAT HAS A DIFFERENT FATHER OR MOTHER?DOES HE OR SHE MEAN LESS TO YOU? HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE MORE THAN 1 MOTHER OR FATHER OF YOUR OWN CHILDren ?
HOW MANY OF YOU HAD /OR / ARE PARENTS RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILDREN ,THAT DONT QUITE FIT ANY OF THESE DESCRIPTIONS?HOW MANY OF YOU STAY IN UNHEALTH Y RELATIONSHIPS FOR FEAR OF GOING TO HELL?

HOW MANY HOS OUT THERE … THAT HAVE KIDS TO GET A PAYDAY?HOW MANY PEOPLE GETTING THEY ASS KICKED AND ARE FORCED TO SUBMIT CAUSE YO MAMA GOT HER ASS KICKED?THEN WHAT is CORRECT?

how about this:
I PRAY WITH MY CHILDRENI FEED THEM GOOD FOODTHEY RESPECT PEOPLES DIFFERENCESTHEY TRAVEL THE WORLD WITH METHE KNOW WHO THEY ARETHEY ADORE THEIR FATHERS AND ARE LOVED BY 2 PARENTS OR MORE
-
OR TWO OR MORE SETS OF LOVING GRANDPARENTSTHEY CRYTHEY GET HURTTHEY GET SICKTHEY HEAL
THEY ARE real
THEY ARE NOT AN IDEA or a TOPICAND NEITHER AM I .I AM ALIVE .I AM BEAUTIFUL WOMAN.I AM A GOOD WOMAM.I AM GROWINGI AM COMPLETE WITH OR WITHOUT A PARTNER AND WILL ALWAYS BEAND I HAVE DREAMS OF A FAMILY STRUCTUREALL OF MY DREAMS DO NOT COME TRUEAND DESPITE ALL OF THE PAIN IN MY LIFE …IN MY MOTHERS LIFE …IN MY GRAND MOTHERS LIFEWE HAVE ALWAYS ENDUREDAND THERE IS SO MUCH JOY TO BE EXPERIENCED.I NEVER HAD A FATHER AND I DONT KNOW WHAT THAT FEELS LIKE -BUT MY CHILDREN DO , AND THEY LOVE THEIR ‘PARENTS’ .
WE ARE THEIR CHAMPIONS .

live how you want . follow which ever pattern YOU like .MY CHILDREN WILL BE LEADERSand they will not ever be slaves to this society’s failing idea of morality.THEY OWN THEIR MINDS AND THEIR DREAMS.
BIRTH CONTROL lol … could have 10 babies instead of 2 .

I LOVE CHILDREN AND I WILL HAVE AS MANY AS GOD WILL GIVE ME .
I AM VERY HEALTHY AND RESPONSIBLE AND SO ARE ALL OF MY PARTNERS
I CHOSE THEM WISELY AND SOBERLY .
ALL GOOD BROTHERS .
your opinions lack experience and are not only careless but also very uninformed and immature.
nothing is sacred here . and i see why.

if i loose you as a fan because i want to continue to have children thenF*CK OFF… WHO NEEDS YOU ….CERTAINLY NOT ME … KICK ROCKS … CALL TYRONE … PACK LIGHT …. BITE ME

i have defended myself here ON THIS SITE and hurled a few insults .. but only in response to your insults ofmy music , my clothes , my lyrics , my hair , my being a woman , my spirit, my choices of partners….
these have all been on trial here . and i continued to support the energy of this place .

this is to all the okay players / REAL HUMAN BEINGS hiding behind screen names in order to insult one another and who ever else you will.
geeeez…i had to say somethingi am so sad for parents who try , today guysenough is enuf.

dont judge to quickly , OKAY PLAYER?
i know you are having fun , but what if it were you and your children?my son is 10 .my daughter, 4 .

For those who don't know, Teddy Afro is a major superstar (the man!) in Ethiopia who unfortuntaly has been in jail over a fatal hit and run accident. His guilt has yet to be proven, even though he is serving time, so it is a major talking point in Ethiopia. FREE TEDDY!

The Game cries over Hip Hop

From Music Choice, check out this spotlight on The Game. He cries. Yep wears his emotions right on his sleeve when it comes to hip hop. The tears start to fall around 4:12.

Look even fellow ex-G-Unit-member-caught-on-tape-crying-Young Buck said every man has "an emotional side". You think?! Nah thugs are supposed to be invincible, not human. Many of my friends were touched by this video, especially those who can relate to not fitting in. What about you? Were you touched? Do I need to give you a tissue?

I thought it was courageous of the Game to be so transparent, when just about everything in popular Hip Hop nowadays is about posturing and perpetrating. Maybe he's right and doesn't belong in today's Hip Hop, but maybe that's why today's Hip Hop needs him...

Here's to real talk and to a Game/Young Buck mixtape where they say screw it, I'll be emotional when I f**king feel like it!! w/a cameo by Lil Wayne talking about how much Nivea's STILL got his nose open. (the tape starts with him talking about Khia...the Nivea confession starts about 1:09)

the reaction of the girl watching the video on the tape cracked me up "NOOOOOOOO" Keep it real Wayne! and u go Nivea! LOL

Don't Sleep on MC Solaar!

MC Solaar is considered one of the premier francophone Hip Hop artists out of France, and overall one of the greatest urban poets. Because of his clever word play, lyricism, and popularity, he has even been referred to as the Jay-Z of France. I personally cannot vouch for the comparision, but nevertheless, I think it speaks to the fact that the brother, like Jay-Z, in many ways is on point. Much of his lyrical content tells of the struggles and hardships for Black people that migrated to France and tried to make a living. He was born in Senegal, but his parents relocated to France when he was only 6 months old. He got his inspiration to rap when he was 12 years old spending time in Egypt. There, he discovered the Zulu Nation and became fascinated with the rapping styles of Hip Hop's godfather Afrika Bambaataa.

Some of us North American headz got exposed to MC Solaar for his work on Guru's Jazzmatazz project where he blessed Missy's track "All N My Grill". For the hard core Sex and the City tv fans, his 2001 song "La Belle et Le Bad Boy" was featured on the final episode. Check it out below. (It was also featured on the MTV series "The Hills")

This is his brand new track. Next September, the classic French comedy movie The Adventures of Rabbi Jacob will be turned into a musical.

Mc Solaar wrote the lyrics for its opening song. Here is the video.

And now if you are like -- yeah those videos are cool but can I see one with Mc Solaar in it? lol. I got 'cha

OK that video made me want to seek out the translation. Here is a weak one from Google. This is what it says the first verse means.

F**k the Earth, if I die here's my will
Put ashes in the mouths of all our opponents
Turn and front kick the false who come to collect
I love flowers and kids, that my death serve their future.

Peut-être comprendront-ils le sens du sacrifice.
Maybe they will understand the meaning of sacrifice.

La difference entre les valeurs et puis l’artifice.
The difference between values and then artifice.

The hook says

Solaar it is time
Listen Solaar cry
Solaar it is time
Listen Solaar cry

What u think? Is the brotha dope or what? and if you have a better translation, help a sista out!

Venus gives Common's girlfriend the beat down!

That was a dramatic title huh? Yeah I know, but it got your attention didn't it and you wanted to read the story, didn't you? So don't call me trifling OK! lol.

Seriously, though, Common's rumored girlfriend, Serena, lost the Wimbledon singles title to her sister Venus. This makes five Wimbledon titles for Venus. Venus beat Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4 in the final. She had previously lost to Serena in 2002 and ‘03. The win at the All England Club gave Venus her seventh major title. The sisters will play later in the women’s doubles match. BTW, Jay-Z stopped by to take in the action as well. No, B wasn't there with him.

Meet Barack's Asian Sister...

Even though many have been focusing on Obama's endeavors to secure the hispanic vote, his campaign is reaching out to the Asian American community as well, and his Asian half sister is stepping up to the plate.

Meet Maya Soetoro-Ng. She and Barack share the same mom. Barack's mom was married to an Indonesian businessman, and they both (Barack & Maya) lived in Jakarta. Seotoro-Ng's husband is Chinese-Canadian. She teaches at an all-girls school in Hawaii.

Initially, as the campaign focused on fighting out the primaries, state by state, "the idea was to downplay to some degree race and ethnicity," said Soetoro-Ng in an interview with The Associated Press. "A lot of the emphasis had been on reaching out, making connections, closing the gaps."
That theme resonated among Obama supporters of all backgrounds, said Soetoro-Ng, who is nine years younger than Obama and considers him "the strong male force" in her life after her parents' divorce.

It was with Obama she attended her first blues concert and her first voter registration drive, she said. The two remain close: She was there when Obama's oldest daughter, Malia, 9, was born, and plans to help celebrate her 10th birthday on the 4th of July, on the campaign trail.

Soetoro-Ng's appearances give voters a chance to get to know Obama as a person, not just an elected official. Her stories illustrate the development of his character, from his days as a teenager who loved basketball and bodysurfing and didn't always get the strongest grades, to his growing sense of civic duty in the summers she spent with him in Chicago.

To many, Obama's Asian-American half-sister represents yet another aspect of Obama's identity that makes him unique as a presidential candidate, although it has been underplayed amid the excitement surrounding his shot at becoming the first black president.

"It would be the first time that the first family is comprised in part of Asian-Americans _ as well as African-Americans, of course," said Keith Kamisugi, a coordinator with Asian-Americans for Obama. (source)

You know, many American families are not homogeneous. I have a bunch of Chinese, Puerto Rican, Haitian, Irish, Portuguese, and African American 1st cousins, to name a few, so to me his family make up is quite the norm. Rep for your brother Maya!!!!

Glastonbury and Mandela B-day concert

Here's a little TV news recap of both concerts even though the focus seems to be Amy Wino supposedly punching a fan.

When I see Amy Crackhouse singing with all of "those black children" behind her, for Mandela's 46664 concert no less, I am reminded of her infamous racist tune. Ugggh she disgusts me!

Here's some video of Jay-Z's performance at Glastonbury concert. (parental advisory) Note the dis to Noel Gallagher, one of the most vocal critics of Jay-Z's appearance, as Jay performs Wonderwall by Noel's band, Oasis. (he he he)

I get the dis, Jay-z, but please baby, let B sing, u stick to rappin! Peep the guitar on his neck -- You know when the harder rock flava kicked in, he made sure he took that guitar off LMAO. 99 problems but playin the guitar ain't one, at least not for this performance. Nelson Mandela's B-day dinner!

Folk came out to rep for the freedom fighter and former South African President. Oprah Winfrey, Robert DeNiro, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Forest Whitaker among others came out to his 90th birthday dinner. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and former US President Bill Clinton were also on the guest list. Wanna see px? click here.

His dinner is part of a week long UK visit celebrating his 90th birthday. A whole week! Age ain't nothin but a number when it comes to partying huh?

Of course, Mandela "parties" with a purpose. At the fundraiser dinner for his AIDS awareness campaign, Mandela took the opportunity to break his silence on the political situation in Zimbabwe. He addressed the ‘tragic failure of leadership’ in Zimbabwe, following weeks of violence, which have guaranteed the re-election of President Robert Mugabe this week.

He also met with Queen Elizabeth. Tomorrow the birthday concert goes down! Annie Lennox, Leona Lewis, Amy Winehouse, Jamelia, Simple Minds and Eminem are among the many artist who are supposed to be performing.

South African artists will also represent. R&B star and multi-South African Music Awards winner Loyiso Bala, who will be singing a duet with UK's Jamelia. He is also an ambassador for Mandela's 46664 Aids charity.

Loyiso will be performing Stevie Wonder's song As at the concert.

So if you had to choose between attending the BET awards or the 46664 Mandela concert and dinner, which one would it be?

Jay-Z speaks in detail about Glastonbury Controversy

The Glastonbury festival goes down June 28. Many said Jay-z was the wrong choice to headline this traditionally rock-led festival. He will be the first rapper to top the bill on the Pyramid Stage for this legendary festival. There's been much haterade on the festival and Jay as a result. Some just resent that a Hip Hop artist is the headliner; others would have appreciated a UK artist rather than a US one, let alone a US RAPPER. Even Dizzee Rascal expressed some reservations about Jay-Z as headliner. Jay-Z hasn't said too much regarding the controversy until now....

Here is one of the first female MC's making an impact in the Greek Hip Hop scene. Her style is Low Bap, a sub-genre of the Greek hip hop music scene, that emerged in the mid-1990s as the sound of the prominent Greek hip hop group Active Member. According to Wikipedia, Low Bap is characterized by slower tempo and rapping than usual, often combined with lyrics of political content.

Yung Buck vs 50 Cent

Now I usually don't give space to blog about all the beef casserole goin down in Hip Hip right now, but here is something real -- not a bunch of taunts via the media and mix tapes to make money, but an actual conversation between 50 and Young Buck.

Yeah it's all part of the beef between the two, but the convo gives some insight into the business...50 may have released this to embarrass Buck, but on the real it gives some insight and may even make u have some compassion for Buck -- the brotha is obviously strugglin to do what he feels is right and endeavoring to keep his head and money together, as well as mend the wounds between him and 50.

Flava disclaimer -- there's some cussin' Parental advisory recommended. lol

I always wondered why it seems everyone in G-Unit has to be a 50 cent cheerleader. Now I have a clue -- it seems 50 is like a "father" or a pimp-pastor to these dudes; he gives them guidance , "the truth", and money/opportunity and then they "owe" him thier lives and loyalty. Don't upset the God- father! I felt like I was listening to a convo between a pimp and a whore, not friends...("Please don't cut me off from the fam, I was just confused man...")

I wondered if Buck knew 50 was recording this personal coversation. (If not, he may be able to sue) That ain't friendship, it's just mad tacky and manipulative. 50 got some serious control issues.

And now with Buck's pride hurt (and obviously his pocket), it's war.
Buck responds and says the tape was a year old. Peep his response in full here. (parental advisory) It's a hot track if I do say so myself.

They both need to learn from Lil Wayne and his daddy, Birdman. Just kiss and make up...

Btw Lil Wayne has moved 1 million units of Carter III thus far, despite the leak. A Milli, A Milli, A Milli....

The Hip Hop Kings of Russia

I came across this mini documentary on Hip Hop culture in Russia 2000. It amazes me how much of the traditional Hip Hop culture like graffiti lives just as much as the music and dance.

Before you take look, ask yourself what you think Hip Hop in Russia would be like. Then see how your image stacks up to those in the documentary.

On a whole other tip, I think the narrator's voice makes me feel like I am watching National Geographic or something...

R Kelly's mole is ON the tape!

Here ye! Here ye! The mole is on the tape I say! The mole is on the tape!

Prosecuters said the mole on R Kelly's back is NOT on the guy in the video, so it is not thier client, but guess what? The mole is on the tape.

Defense attorneys in the R. Kelly trial took a blow yesterday as a forensic expert identified the man on the sex tape as having a mark on his back.

According to the AP, today in court, video forensics expert Grant Fredericks analyzed several frozen frames of the sex tape which revealed a dark mark on the man's back. Fredericks compared the still frames to a photo taken of Kelly's back after his arrest in 2002, where a dark fingernail sized mole is evident.

"There is a mark on the man's back in the exact same position," he said.
The defense countered Fredericks' testimony by suggesting that the back mark in the video is not in the same place as is Kelly's mole. Defense attorney, Ed Genson also argued that at one point in the tape, a spot faded in and out of view thus suggesting the tape itself has a technical problem.

Earlier in today's testimony, an FBI forensic expert testified that the male and female participants in the tape were neither computer-generated nor altered. Instead George Skaluba said the video appears to show "real people in a real environment" and if someone sought to create digital images, it could be costly and timely-taking up to years to do.

Skaluba also testified he could not state with certainty whether it is Kelly or a look-a-like on the tape and that the tape in question is a copy several times removed from the original.

The multi-Grammy award winning pied piper of R&B faces 14 counts of videotaping, producing or soliciting child pornography. He pled innocent to all charges and if convicted could face up to 15 years in prison. (sohh)

Another Busta bodyguard shot dead!

reported from allhiphop.com

A man who worked security for rapper Busta Rhymes was shot multiple times and found dead in the back of his pickup truck on Wednesday (May 28th), AllHipHop.com has learned.

Jermaine Williams, 35, of the Bronx, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds in Ozone Park, Queens.

Police found blood dripping from the backseat of his SUV when they discovered Williams' body, which was wrapped in a blanket in the backseat of the SUV.

Sources have confirmed with AllHipHop.com that Williams, also known as “Black,” was Rhymes' bodyguard, although it is unclear if he was working for the rapper as of press time.

Busta Rhymes has been on a tour of Europe and was not in the country at the time of the incident sources told AllHipHop.com.

Williams, who leaves behind two children, reportedly went to Queens to visit his grandmother and ended up missing for almost 24 hours.

Police are still seeking the suspects who committed the murder.

Williams is the second bodyguard employed by Busta Rhymes to be shot dead.

His former bodyguard Israel Ramirez was shot dead on February 5, 2006, outside of a warehouse, where a music video for the remix to Rhymes’ single “Touch It” was being shot.

Ramirez, 29, was shot in the chest in front of the building, where as many as 500 people may have witnessed the shooting.

To date, a shooter has never been identified and Rhymes has denied any knowledge of Ramirez’ shooting.

Mystery witness shuts down R Kelly Trial

As reported by SOHH, testimony came to an abrupt close today in the R. Kelly trial as the defense was sought out by a man that could possibly discredit the prosecution's key witness.

According to The Chicago Tribune, the unidentified man will fly into Chicago tonight and meet with Kelly's defense team. Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan said, "I have no idea what's going on. It might be the impeachment of the [prosecution's] witness."

Defense attorneys denied allegations that this was an attempt to delay the testimony of the prosecution's key witness, a woman who will likely testify she engaged in an under-aged three-way sex act years ago with Kelly and the alleged female on the tape. (sohh)

Kelly's team said they were called by the mystery witness and they'd need time to meet with him in order to prepare.

So who do think this mystery witness might be? The prosecution's key witness's ex boyfriend?

TI gets reality TV Show

Yeah MTV is jumpin' on the opportunity to get a peek at a celebrity Hip Hop thug serve his time Hollywood style. So as TI does his mandatory community service while under house arrest, the cameras will be rollin' to capture it all. Of course the airing of the show will most likely coincide with the release of Paper Trail. Can we say marketing plan?

Now a couple of thoughts come to my mind.

1) TI is gawn' git paid as he endeavors to make back the millions he had to put out, so that he could be under house arrest instead of a jail cell.

2) Unfortunately, in contrast, on the real tip (no pun intended), so many folk who are actually on lock down for lesser criminal offenses are used for free labor or gigs that pay little to nothing, let alone hardly being able to get a living wage once they've completed their sentences. Don't believe me? Ask presidential hopeful John McCain.
*
Yeah, TI rep for your "peeps" who have your same celebrity, access, privilege and money. I ain't hatin' on his hustle, just the circumstances and systems that created it. Cmon, if he wasn't under house arrest and decided to go on a public service tour voluntarily(not mandated by law), you think MTV would buy several episodes in advance like they did in this case? NOT!

Better yet and even more personal and arguably more important, would U be interested in watching such a show if TI wasn't under arrest?

Chuck D's blog from PE UK tour.

PE just wrapped up their Don't Look Back UK tour. Here are some of Chuck D's thoughts on his experience.

LONDON NATION INVASION 2008 May 27, 2008
I spent the last 4-5 weeks preparing for the DONT LOOK BACK tour of the UK and parts of Europe and it has paid off, but took my total commitment and concentration to pull it off. As of this writing we just took on Glasgow Scotland, which historically has been the most powerful show fan base across the water. This after Manchester and Brixton with places in between like Dublin which required every muscle of my body to use. These shows get you into athletic shape in 10 days. But it ain' pretty. Everything will hurt for two hours in the morning as if I played an NFL game. Anybody that says it's easy can't imagine to yell loud in rhyme while moving at 110 beats per minute. It's what it is, and I couldn't or wouldn't do it any other way. This is what was brought to the table performing Nations and a blizzard of PE cuts afterwards. We don't have Griff on this tour because of a passport discrepancy after his fire loss. Its the government finding every technicality to stop our thing with horsesht moves like that. Still we had to rock on, but I couldn't help but think that Professor Griff would've LOVED these gigs. He will see us in NY at HOT 97 Summerjam.

The requirement was to perform the album from beginning to end, and all in between. It's our standard album and was our obligation to blast the hell out of it . The tour opens with Hank and Keith Shocklee of the BOMB SQUAD, and had KOOL KEITH, and ANTI POP CONSORTIUM opening up and doing it bad to the bone. A new group named EZRA BANG and another new band named MAXFIELD opened in a couple markets and offered great promise. The weird factor was again the crowd numbers. Did the black crowd consider the movement passe as Mary J Blige seemed to fit that aspiration based from the posters of her playing at Wembley? Well I just chalked it up to sold out crowd with little space for walk up. (source)
*
Check out the new video PE Black is Back!

What u think of this new joint? Think they need a Lil Jon/Soulja Boy remix?

It's nice to know that PE does sold out shows in the UK, but how relevant do u think PE is to the current stateside Hip Hop movement?

Swedish Hip Hop Pioneers: The Latin Kings

Naah boo, this ain't about the US gang The Latin Kings, but about the trio of guys who helped pioneer Hip Hop in Sweden. The members of the group are the lead rapper Dogge Doggelito (Douglas Léon) and the two brothers, Salla and Chepe. They all have roots in Latin America (Venezuela and Chile).

They grew up in the concrete suburbs in Botkyrka where a large proportion of the population are immigrants and refugees and the poverty is more visible than elsewhere in Sweden. The hip hop subculture has a large following in these areas of Stockholm. Their songs reflect life in the less affluent suburbs.

TLK were, in 1994, among the first to release a hip hop album with lyrics in Swedish (the first was Just D). Swedish rappers had before that time almost always used English. The debut album was Välkommen till förorten (Welcome to the suburb) and the very first single was "Snubben" (The dude). The group felt like they had been ripped off by their record company and they decided to start their own label, Red Line Records, on which they have signed a number of talented hip hop artists in Sweden such as Fattaru, Kalle Kath, Fjärde världen and Ison & Fille.

Latin Kings has become famous for rapping in the local Rinkeby Swedish, a "multiethnolect language" that is used in areas with many immigrants. It's basically Swedish with loanwords from Turkish, Aramaic, Spanish, Finnish , Persian, Arabic and a few other languages. Consequently, they
ushered in a new wave of Swedish hip hop artists. The coming generation of Swedish talent would be distinguished from the first by their inclusion of Swedish language rhymes, as opposed to the exclusive use of English rhymes by Sweden's first generation of rappers. (source) Below is a taste of TLK doing thier thing!

The Latin Kings - Shonnar Vet

Latinos making waves in the Swedish Hop Hop movement. That's wassup! What's cool is that the video not only reps universal Hip Hop elements - grafitti, Dj'ing, rappin', but also the whole bike thing gives u some insight into what's goin' down in Hip Hop culture in Sweden. Peep the Padres and NY Yankee shirts. As a New Yorker, I am feelin the luv!! Don't miss the jazz like scatting over scratching at the end. (GURU would be proud) What u think? U feelin them or what, kompis?

"Shonnar vet om dem jiddrar me oss de blir aaaaajajajajaj...kompis "

P.S. I heard that kompis means friend, buddy or in the hop hop context homie.

Will Dental records clear R Kelly?

Since the Little Man scenario didn't go over too well, the defense has another trick up its sleeve. Dental records!!!

The defense is hoping that braces will help prove the identity of the girl on the tape. According to Kelly's lawyers, the alleged victim had braces at the time the tape was made (sometime in the late 90's) but the girl on the tape did not.

Tjada Burnett, a family friend of the alleged victim, testified she could identify the female participant on the tape by her "cheeks, her nose, her facial structure."

The defense accused Burnett of lying to aid the prosecution because when asked whether her friend wore braces she said the braces could have been put on after 1999.

OMG -- could that be a hole in a testimony? A measley 1 point by the skin of thier teeth for the defense, but the prosecutors STILL scored as a former empolyee of R Kelly identified him on the tape.

According to the Associated Press, Lindsey Perryman, said she worked as a record producer and personal assistant to Kelly on and off from 2000-2007 and testified she was "110 percent sure" he was the male on the tape. After being approached by prosecutors in December 2007, Perryman said it was at this time she first viewed the tape.

Perryman told jurors she looked at an album cover before viewing the tape and did not want to believe it was her former boss on the video because he was "very, very good to me."

"I was in shock and I wanted to be 110 percent sure," she said. Perryman along with two other witnesses also identified the female participant as the same woman denying partaking in the video. According to the Associated Press, Lindsey Perryman, said she worked as a record producer and personal assistant to Kelly on and off from 2000-2007 and testified she was "110 percent sure" he was the male on the tape.

Perryman along with two other witnesses also identified the female participant as the same woman denying partaking in the video. (source)

As time progresses, this whole "that is not me on the tape, it's video special effects" defense is getting a bit trifling. First, a mole R Kelly has on his back was not in the video and now the alleged victim supposedly had braces when the tape was made but the girl in the video does not. U think that provides enough resonable doubt to free R Kelly?

R Kelly pedophile case update

Now the defense for the pied-piper of R&B wants the reporter to take the stand. Defense attorneys filed a motion seeking testimony from Chicago Sun-Times reporter Jim DeRogatis, who in 2002 was sent the sex tape that allegedly shows Kelly having intercourse with an underage girl. Kelly's lawyers want to ask DeRogatis how he came in possession of the tape and if he made copies. For more details, click here

Both R Kelly and the alleged victim deny being in the video. However, seven witnesses thus far have identified the alleged victim and/or R Kelly in the tape (including the alleged victim's mama!) Still the defense is trying to convince the jury that special effects make it look like it was R Kelly, but it was really someone else.

As reported at digitalspy.co.uk, R. Kelly's lawyer Sam Adam Jr. even went as far as using the film Little Man to prove his theory.

During the defence's cross examination of the victim's friend Simha Johnson, Adam asked the witness if she had seen the film Little Man. He said: "They put the head of Marlon Wayans on a midget and it looked real, didn't it?"Jamison replied "Not really!", causing the courtroom to erupt into laughter.
**
Laughter is right. C'mon now "Little Man"? How naive do they think people are? What do you think of the current "computer graphics made me do it" defense? Will it get R Kelly free?

Bob Marley Director makes EXODUS

Martin Scorsese pulled out of directing an authorized documentary about Bob Marley because of "scheduling conflicts."

So who steps into take his place?

Oscar-winning film-maker Jonathan Demme. The untitled documentary is set to be released on February 6, 2010 to mark the 65th anniversary of the musician's birth.

Demme, who won an Academy Award in 1992 for The Silence of the Lambs, said he was "thrilled and humbled" to work with the Marley family on the project.

Bob Marley's son Ziggy, who will act as executive producer, said he was "excited" by Demme's participation. "His empathy with my father's body of work and his unique understanding of the musical documentary form makes me confident that this film will be the ultimate celebration of my father's life," he said.

Demme, who has previously made documentaries with Neil Young and Talking Heads, said Marley was "one of the greatest human beings of modern times". He said he hoped the film, produced by Tuff Gong Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment, would be a "worthy vessel" for Marley's "spiritual and musical brilliance".

Marley died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 36.

Scorsese had been due to follow his Rolling Stones concert film Shine a Light with the Marley documentary. He is also working on films about Beatles guitarist George Harrison and former US President Theodore Roosevelt. (BBC)

You know Spike Lee has done catch a fire, talkin' now how u not gawn call me??!! Regardless, this film better be good! Otherwise this woman will be a crying (yeah I said it!) Do you think Demme will do it justice or would u have prefered another Director?

I also understand that a biopic based on a book by Bob Marley’s widow, Rita, is also in the works. I wonder who will direct that one. Anybody got the scoop? Fill us in!!!

I nominate Jill Scott to play Rita in that one!
